Most podcast video production happens in a studio with the same lighting setup every episode. This one didn't have that luxury.
I was brought on as DP for an episode of UNDISTRACTED, hosted by Brittany Packnett Cunningham, filmed on location at the Maryland Governor's residence in Annapolis, Maryland with Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Moore. If you've ever had to plan on-location podcast filming in a space you don't control the lighting or layout of, this is that problem, solved.
A sit-down like this isn't shot the way a studio podcast production is. The location dictates the plan:
Before setup, the priority was understanding the space — window direction, where light would fall through the day, and where cameras and switching gear could sit without becoming part of the conversation. On-location podcast production lives or dies in this stage. The crew's job is to disappear into the location, not dress it up as a set.
Unlike a scripted commercial shoot, this only happens once. There's no "let's get that again." The setup centered on:
If you run comms for a nonprofit, an advocacy organization, or an executive's public platform, you know the stakes of a sit-down interview: one location, one shot at capturing something that will represent your organization publicly for years. Every choice — lighting, camera position, the AV chain, how much crew the room can absorb — comes from one question: what does this location allow, and how do we make the production disappear?
If you're planning on-location podcast filming or an executive interview that needs to feel authentic rather than staged, let's talk about how documentary-style podcast production can capture it right the first time — because with a location shoot like this, there's usually no second one.
